Kathmandu Durbar Square:

Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka Square) is one of three historic royal palace plazas in the Kathmandu Valley designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Positioned in the old city center, it served as the seat of power for Malla kings and later Shah monarchs who governed Nepal.

• History & Evolution: Early foundations were established as far back as the 3rd–4th century during the Licchavi era. The square expanded substantially between the 12th and 18th centuries under Malla rule, featuring detailed Newar architectural work, open courtyards, and pagoda temples. Following the unification of Nepal in 1768, Prithvi Narayan Shah added the landmark nine-story Nautalle Durbar.
• Hanuman Dhoka Palace: The central palace complex contains historic courtyards such as Nasal Chowk and Mul Chowk, guarded by a 1672 statue of Hanuman clad in red robes.
• Kumari Ghar (Kumari Bahal): A three-story palace adorned with woodcarvings that serves as the official residence of the Kumari, Nepal’s living goddess.

Pashupatinath Temple:

• History & Origin: Historical records trace the site’s existence back to at least 400 CE under Licchavi rule. Legend connects the shrine’s origin to the Pandavas from the Mahabharata, as well as the story of a divine cow shedding milk over a hidden Shiva Lingam.
• Architecture: The central pagoda features two copper-and-gold roof levels, four silver-plated entrance doors, and an intricate golden pinnacle (gajur) crowning the top.
• Sanctum & Idol: The inner sanctum houses a four-faced stone Mukhalinga, with each face representing different aspects of Shiva (Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Tatpurusha, Aghora, and the top representing Ishana).

The complex encompasses over 500 minor temples, shrines, and open ghats along the Bagmati River used for Hindu cremations and daily evening Bagmati Aarati rituals.
